Cougars Dominate Sabres in Road Contest

Fond du Lac, Wis. -- After falling short in their first road contest of the season against Central College, the Concordia University Chicago women's basketball team (4-4, 3-1 NACC) took down the Marian Sabres (2-8, 0-4) on Saturday afternoon.

Inside the Box

  • Ava Gardner (Park Ridge, Ill.) led the Cougars with 20 points, four rebounds, four steals, and three assists.

  • Mikalah Ellis (Chicago, Ill.) led the team defensively, with 10 rebounds while Alisyn MacGregor (Loves Park, Ill.) and Chloe Schaafsma (Lockport, Ill.) followed with five a piece.

  • The team shot 49.1% from the field.

CUC started out by grabbing the first bucket of the game off a feed to the paint to Bailey Steinkamp (Cary, Ill.) to get the game underway. The Cougars fell behind early in the first, but brought themselves back by going on a 20-6 run, giving them a 22-10 lead after the first quarter.

Going into the second it was all gas for the Cougars as they shot 58.3% from the field while holding the Sabres to a mere 12.5%. Rebounds from Kayla Jackson (Worth, Ill.) and Lauren Saleh (River Forest, Ill.) made major contributions to the team as they fought to keep the momentum on their side. With the Sabres fighting to keep pace with the Cougars, Gardner kicked it into high gear, giving the team 12 of her 20 points within the second half.

While the clock ran down, the Cougars brought new faces in with Emily Balaban (Manitowoc, Wis.) coming in off the bench and giving the Cougars their final points of the game, finalizing the score 65-45. This win gives the team a 3-1 NACC record.

The Cougars hit the road for the third straight contest next week where they head to the South side for a matchup with IIT at 1pm.. Coverage for all Concordia-Chicago teams can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
