Women's Volleyball Falls to Benedictine

Lisle, Ill. -- The Concordia University Chicago women's volleyball team hit the road Tuesday night for a conference matchup with the Benedictine University Eagles. The Cougars played well throughout much of the match, but ultimately fell in three sets.

After falling behind early on in the first set, CUC put together a late rally. They scored on seven of 10 rallies to tie things at 24 before the Eagles secured the next two points to take a 1-0 lead.

The momentum of the late run in the first set carried into the second, as the Cougars jumped out to a 9-2 lead thanks in large part to four service aces from sophomores Isabelle Vernengo (Plainfield, Ind.) and Katie Stonich (Sadieville, Ky.), who both had a pair.

The Eagles were able to overcome the early deficit, however, and went on to win the final two sets by final scores of 25-20 and 25-14, however.

Notes

  • Junior Alyssa Henline (Fort Wayne, Ind.) led the way with 11 kills. Her 11 points were also the most on the team.

  • Sophomore Sophie Kovachevich (Huntley, Ill.) added two service aces.

  • Senior Julia Beers (Mishawaka, Ind.) had a team-high 13 digs.

  • Stonich finished second on the team in kills with six, digs with 12, and points with eight.

  • Juniors Tori Steele (Elizabethtown, Ky.) and Katie Schrems (South Bend, Ind.), senior Mikala Perino (DePere, Wis.) and Vernengo all recorded two blocks.

The team will be back in action this Friday, Oct. 8, at Marian University. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., and a stream will be available on the Marian Athletics website.
