River Forest, Ill. -- It was the season finale for the Concordia University Chicago women's soccer team on Wednesday as they welcomed Division Street rival Dominican University to Concordia Stadium. The Cougars put up one of their best defensive fights of the season, but ultimately fell 3-0.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the crowd sported pink apparel and the team was recognized for having raised nearly $700 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
It was a long stretch of scoreless action once the game began, with Dominican eventually breaking the scoring drought in the 31st minute of play.
The Cougars' defense put together a tremendous effort as they played with their backs against the wall throughout much of the match. Junior goalkeeper Kassie Silenzi (Carpentersville, Ill.) had quite a performance in net, saving 10 of the 11 shots she faced in 75 minutes in net.
With the strong defense and goalkeeping, the Stars were shutout offensively for nearly the first 40 minutes of the second half. They were only able to eventually score off a pair of corner kicks in the final seven minutes of action.
Sophomores Lucia Fullone (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) and Medelin Loza (Cicero, Ill.) along with freshman Sophie Valles (Minooka, Ill.) all registered shots for CUC. Fullone's and Valles' were both on goal.
There were 24 Cougars who logged minutes in the season's finale. The team's lone senior, Karissa Walters (Zeeland, Mich.) played all 90 minutes, as she's done so in all but one contest this year.
