Cougars Fall In Opening Doubleheader

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Looking to get the 2020 season off to a hot start, the Concordia University Chicago Softball team got their season underway this afternoon. They would take on the Lake Forest Foresters inside the Dome at Rosemont. The Cougars battled tough in game one, but the Foresters were able to score eight unanswered over the last two innings to take game one 12-5. Game two would be similar, with the Foresters scoring the last five runs of game two to down CUC 10-4.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Nia DeGeorge had a big opening series for CUC. She finished 3-4 on the day with a double and a triple.
  • Holly Bathje got the start in game one and worked four innings inside the circle. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits while striking out six.
  • Errors plagued CUC in game one, with just six of the 12 runs being earned.
  • Hailey Howard got the start in game two. She worked five innings, allowing seven runs.
GAME ONE: L 12-5
  • The Cougars plated two runs in their opening at-bats. Sydney Sterrett drew an opening walk and scored on an error.
  • Sydney Paulauskis-Lauher generated the second run on the inning on a sac fly to make it 2-0.
  • Lake Forest answered with a unearned run in the bottom of the first.
  • CUC made it 3-1 when pinch runner Isabel Ortiz scored on a wild pitch.
  • Lake Forest took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth with three runs on three hits.
  • The Cougars answered back with a Nia DeGeorge double and a Forester error in the top of the fifth to make it 5-4 CUC.
  • The Foresters broke it open by scoring the next eight runs to take game one 12-5.
 
GAME TWO
  • Lake Forest scored first in the top of the second. They were able to load the bases and bring home four runs on three hits.
  • CUC got one back in the bottom half. Kacey Powers led off the inning with a double. She then came around to score on a DeGeorge single to center to make it 4-1.
  • The Cougars pulled within 4-3 in the bottom of the third. Becky Pieroni doubled to open the inning. Sterrett then singled to put two in scoring position. They would come around to score on a sac fly and a RBI groundout.
  • After Lake Forest brought one across in the top of the fourth CUC answered with one in the bottom of the inning. DeGeorge continued her big day with a leadoff triple. She then came home to score on an RBI groundout by Ortiz.
  • Lake Forest scored the final five runs of the contest to take game two 10-4.
 
Up Next
  • The Cougars (0-2) will hit the road to the sunshine state for their annual spring break trip to Florida. CUC will play eight games over the course of the week, beginning on Sunday morning.
