Regents Evade CUC in Overtime

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- Looking to take the series split against Rockford University, after losing a tight match up earlier this season, the Concordia-Chicago Cougars were clipped by the Regents after a 100-95 overtime battle.

Turning Point:
  • Tonight's result came down to the free throw line, as the Regents were nearly perfect, shooting 18-of-19 from the charity stripe, while the Cougars got to the line 37 times but made just 22 free throws.
Inside the Box Score:
  • Senior Xeo Golding had a career-best night, shooting an incredible 12-of-15 from the floor, scoring 32 points.
  • Fellow senior Neil O'Donnell also had a career night, as the Illinois native tallied 16 points and shot 50 percent from the field.
  • Raushaun Amos matched his career-high with 25 points tonight, marking the second-straight game in which he has recorded 25 points.
  • After tonight's game, the Cougars are now 2-1 when competing in overtime.
  • The Regents barely out shot the Cougars tonight, as Rockford shot 50 percent from the field, while CUC hit 48.8 percent of their shots from the floor.
  • Rockford hit 16 three pointers in tonight's contest, marking the most three's CUC has allowed an opponent to make this season.
Quick Recap:
  • While the Regents got on the scoreboard first tonight, CUC quickly got things going as the game was tied at 13 apiece, less than five minutes in.
  • Rockford had pulled ahead to a 25-22 lead, with 9:31 on the clock, before Amos nailed a three that tied the game back up at 25 each.
  • With just under three minutes left in the half, CUC trailed 46-38. From there, Amos and Dewayne Burns Jr. each drained jumpers, followed by Brent Hatten and O'Donnell hitting two free throws each, and pulled within two of the Regents as the half expired.
  • O'Donnell kicked off the second half with a fast break layup that tied the game back up at 48 apiece.
  • At the 18:25 mark, Amos and Golding exchanged layups, allowing the Cougars to take hold of a 53-50 point lead.
  • With six minutes down in the half, Amos drained another three-pointer and extended CUC's lead to eight points, up 58-50 with 14 to go in regulation.
  • Rockford kicked things back into gear and pulled back within two of the Cougars, trailing just 61-59 with nine minutes left to play.
  • From there though, Concordia-Chicago's offense exploded into a 12-0 run that shut out the Regents for nearly three minutes of play. Thanks to the surge, CUC now led 73-59, their largest lead of the night, with just under five minutes left to play.
  • With 1:22 on the clock, CUC still led by a solid seven points, but the Regents had other intentions as they closed out regulation on an 11-6 run that tied the game at 84 apiece and set things into overtime.
  • In the five-minute, overtime frame, the Cougars did not grab one rebound as the Regents out scored CUC 16-11 and ran away with the 100-95 victory.
Up Next:
  • CUC will return to the floor this Saturday at 2 p.m. against Dominican. The contest against the Stars will serve as Concordia-Chicago's senior day, honoring their six graduating members.
