ASHLAND, WIS.—After splitting the day yesterday, the Concordia University Chicago Women's Volleyball team concluded their northern weekend today against Northland College and the College of St.Scholastica. CUC made quick work of the host Northland in three sets before falling to St.Scholastica in four.
MATCH ONE vs. Northland (W 3-0)
Jaylynn Johnson got the day started with a kill. CUC then quickly made it 4-0 with three straight
Julia Beers Aces. The Jills then came roaring back to grab a 8-6 lead. The Cougars worked their way back, using an 8-1 run to take a 20-15 lead late in the set. Two Johnson kills, an ace and two blocks powered the run. CUC was able to easily close out the set 25-20.
In set two the two sides traded points through the early stages of the set. CUC was able to open an 11-7 advantage midway through the set with a
Caroline Gibbons and
Julia Spitelli block to go along with a Henline kill. After a 4-0 CUC run opened up a 17-11 Cougar lead, Northland was able to work their way back within two at 17-15 before tying the set at 22-22. The Cougars were able to close the set 25-22 with kills by Spitelli and Gibbons.
CUC quickly grabbed control in set three. A
Tori Steele kill helped the Cougars to an early 8-5 lead. CUC built the lead out to 17-13 late in the set on a Henline kill. CUC continued on the run to make it 22-14 on kills by Henline and
Jaida Carr. Two kills by Gibbons closed out set three 25-22 to sweep Northland in straight sets.
MATCH TWO vs. St. Scholastica (L 1-3)
In set on CUC got off to a hot start against the Saints with kills by Gibbons and Spitelli to build a 6-1 lead. CUC then used a 5-0 run when they got the block going to take an 11-4 lead. The Cougars continued to add on in the set, building the lead to 20-13 on a
Jennifer Livesay kill. CUC then closed out set one 25-19.
In set two the Saints opened on an 8-1 run. They continued to add on, building the lead out to 13-5 in midway through the set. With Gootee serving CUC got on a run to get back within 15-12 in the set. The Saints answered with an 8-0 run to take set two 25-14.
St.Scholastica got set three started with a 7-2 run to grab control. The Cougars fought back to within 8-7 on a Henline kill. The Saints then built their lead out to 18-9 in the set and cruised to a 25-21 set three win.
Set four saw the Saints once again grab an early 7-1 lead. The Cougars worked their way back within two on a Henline ace and a Spitelli kill. After the Saints opened an 18-12 lead CUC came back one more time to get within 18-17 with Gootee serving. Unfortunately for the Cougars St.Scholastica closed on a 6-1 run to take set four 25-20 and the match 3-1.
The Cougars will continue their eight match road swing next weekend when they head to the Knox College Tournament.
