Milwaukee, WI- Concordia University Chicago (7-12; 1-2 NACC) traveled to take on Alverno College (1-14; 0-3 NACC) in an interconference matchup. CUC came into the match with a sturdy 3-0 record all-time versus Alverno. In the first set they would handedly take care of the Inferno 25-14, but in set two Alverno would compete until the end. The Cougars would still take set two 26-24 and carry that momentum into the final set and win 25-20.
Inside the Box Score:
- Going into the match, Alverno had only recorded eight blocks as a team.
- Clutch aces by Kelly Gootee and Jennifer Livesay would propel the Cougars in critical moments
- CUC completed their fifth sweep on the season.
In set one, CUC took care of the Inferno handedly. Early on the Cougars blocked anything in sight.
Julia Spitelli was the first one to spark the defense, with a strong block right back to the Alverno side. Later in the set,
Alexa Lomantini would set up
Alyssa Henline for the final point of set one, giving Concordia-Chicago a 25-14 set win.
Set two was a different story. Alverno battled, tooth and nail, until the very end. Although the Inferno stayed closer, CUC still continued to deny their offensive attack. Early in the second set
Tori Steele set the tone defensively and gave the Cougars a 7-5 lead. Back and forth play would continue throughout set two but after forcing Concordia to score an extra point, the Inferno would drop set two 26-24.
Following set two, Concordia-Chicago would fall behind early in set three. Alverno would not go away easy and they would lead as much as 16-11 at one point. CUC would play efficiently for the rest of set three and keep drudging their way back. Livesay's ace tied the set up at 17-17 and gave the Cougars all the momentum they needed to eventually finish out the set 25-20.
