KENOSHA, Wis. -- Playing the final non-conference contests of the season, the Concordia Chicago Softball team headed north today to take on Carthage College. Under chilly conditions the Cougars played hard all day, but were unable to rally from behind in both games falling by scores of 3-1 and 6-3.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Sydney Getz led the double header with three hits and an RBI.
- Abbey Sloan had the lone extra base hit of the day which was a triple to left center.
- Karlee Knight got the start in game one and worked three innings allowing three runs on four hits.
- Holly Bathje and Marita VanDyke both threw multiple innings of scoreless relief.
GAME ONE: L, 3-1
The Lady Reds were able to strike first in inning number one. They were able to manufacture a run on a leadoff infield single.
Carthage was able to extend the lead to 3-0 in the third. With two outs a two run homer to left field opened some breathing room.
The score remained the same until the sixth.
Melissa Balkema led off the inning with a walk. Sloan then laid down a sacrifice bunt. On the play Carthage dropped the throw to first, and overthrew third when Balkema took third, allowing CUC to get on the board.
CUC was unable to bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh, falling by a final score of 3-1.
GAME TWO: L, 6-3
Carthage grabbed the momentum right away in game two. They were able to plate six runs on six hits, with all of the runs coming with two outs.
CUC got on the board in the top of the second. Getz led off the inning with a single to left.
Kacey Powers followed with a single of her own. Two outs later
Shania Phillips singled to right center to make it 6-1 Carthage.
The score remained the same until the seventh when CUC tried to rally. Phillips started the inning with a single up the middle. Balkema followed with a bunt single. One out later VanDyke drew a walk to load the bases. An error allowed one run to score on a ground ball to short. Getz then brought another home on a fielders choice which made it 6-3. Powers then nearly put the tying run in scoring position but a nice jumping snag by the Carthage shortstop ended CUC's hopes of a comeback.
The Cougars will be back in action tomorrow afternoon. They will conclude the stopped game with Concordia Wisconsin starting at 4:30pm.
