Chicago, Ill. – After weather has forced multiple postponements, the Concordia University Chicago Softball team finally returned to action today. They hit the road for non-conference action today against North Park University. The Cougars came out swinging in game one, downing the Vikings 13-4. CUC then was able to use a five run fifth inning to come back and sweep the day by a final score of 6-4.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Shania Phillips led the way going 4-8 on the day with three RBI's.
- Sydney Getz had three hits on the day while driving in four, including two big RBI's in game two.
- Kristen Landon and Kacey Powers drove in three each as well.
- Kate Roberts picked up the win in game one. She worked 4.2 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs.
- Karlee Knight picked up the win in game two, working 4.2 innings, allowing six hits and three runs.
GAME ONE: W, 13-4
The Cougars got things going offensively right away. With runners on first and second with one out Getz doubled to left field scoring one.
Shania Phillips followed with a single on the middle making it 2-0 CUC with runners on the corners.
Kristen Landon finished off the scoring for CUC in the inning with a two RBI single up the middle making it 4-0 Cougars.
After Roberts worked around a leadoff hit in the bottom of the first CUC blew the game wide open. With one out and a runner on second a bunt single by
Sydney Sterrett and a North Park error allowed a run to score. With one out and runners on first and second a single up the middle loaded the bases. Landon singled to left center on a 1-1 pitch scoring one. A second Viking error allowed a third run of the inning to score, and a Powers sac fly made it 8-0 CUC after two.
North Park got a single run back on two hits in the bottom of the third. The Vikings made it a 8-4 game in the fifth, scoring three runs on four hits.
CUC built the lead back up in the sixth.
Melissa Balkema and Sterrett opened the inning with singles. An error then allowed Balkema to score. Getz followed with a single to left making it 10-4 CUC. The Cougars continued to add on with hits by Phillips and Powers, making it 13-4 CUC.
Holly Bathje worked the final inning and a third to close out the 13-4 win.
GAME TWO: W, 6-4
CUC started off game two with a run in the first. With one out an error put Sterrett on. After Sterrett stole second a throwing error by the North Park shortstop allowed CUC to get on the board.
North Park answered with a run on one hit in the bottom of the first. They then took a 2-1 lead in the third on two hits in the inning.
CUC answered in a big way in the fifth. A Landon single and an error put two on to begin the inning. A sac bunt put two in scoring position and a North Park error allowed the first run of the inning to score. After a single loaded the bases.
Yasmine Fox then worked a full count walk to plate a run. Getz followed with a single through the right side scoring two. Phillips closed off the inning with an RBI single up the middle to make it 6-2 CUC.
Bathje worked the final two and a third innings to pick up her fourth save of the year, as CUC held on in game two 6-4 to sweep the day.
The Cougars will return to action on Thursday against Dominican. More details about the location and game time will be available tomorrow.
