CUC Pushes Past Carroll

WAUKESHIA, Wis. -- With two shut out periods of play, the Concordia-Chicago men's lacrosse team drove past the Pioneers of Carroll University to win their first game of the season, 9-6.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Tonight's win marked the earliest win during any season in program history.
  • In net, Jack Liskey provided two periods of shut out action, and finished with four saves.
  • Hunter Combe, Tate Macfarlane and Brett Krueger each tallied four points on the night.
The game got off to a slow start, as both teams' defenses were working hard beyond the restraining line and causing possessions to change rapidly. Finally, about seven minutes into the game, Combe worked a pass through to Benjamin Lang who was camped outside the crease and quickly transitioned the pass into the back of the net. A few minutes later, Krueger trekked downfield and found Macfarlane who was able to fire in the second goal of the night. With Macfarlane's goal, the Cougars headed into the second quarter with a 2-0 lead and the game's momentum. Carroll threatened CUC's lead early on in the frame, as the Pioneers scored back-to-back goals to settle the score at two apiece. With 50 seconds left on the clock for the first half, the Cougars called a timeout with possession in their hands. Out of the timeout, Combe dished a pass off to Jordan Loeffler who found Krueger crashing in front of the net. Krueger converted the shot into a goal and gave Concordia-Chicago an electric 3-2 lead with 17.3 seconds remaining. Opening up the second half, the Cougar offense could not be stopped. CUC combined for five straight goals, including two from Krueger, as the Cougars had a grappling 8-2 lead over its CCIW opponent.  However, the Pioneers persevered and went on a three-minute three-goal tear to pull within an 8-5 reach of CUC. Despite the comeback, the Cougars' earlier work held out as Concordia-Chicago ultimately defeated Carroll 9-6. The Cougars return to action this weekend against Kalamazoo College at 1 p.m. inside Concordia Stadium.
