Cougar Men Win Second Straight over Fontbonne

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- After struggling to pull ahead early on, the Concordia-Chicago men's lacrosse team unloaded over the final three quarters of play to dominate past Fontbonne University, 15-8.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Today's win marks the first time in program history that Concordia-Chicago has won back-to-back games.
  • In net, Jack Liskey finished with 13 saves off 38 shots faced. The sophomore netminder picked up his third win of the season and completely shut out Fontbonne's offense during the second quarter of play. With his 13 saves today, the Indiana native has now reached 300 career saves.
  • Sophomore Hunter Combe led the way today, scoring a game-high four goals which marked his highest scoring performance of the season to date.
  • Freshman Nick Fiske scored his first career goals this afternoon, as the Wisconsin native netted three goals. His man up goal from the third quarter ultimately proved to be the game-winner.
Just 31 seconds into the game, Fontbonne made a statement with an early goal to take the quick 1-0 lead.

However less than two minutes later, Tate Macfarlane notched an unassisted goal to tie things up at one goal apiece. At the 12:17 mark, junior Brett Krueger missed on a high shot which teammate Boston Dumas was able to pick up and pass off to Jordan Loeffler. From there, Loeffler scored and handed CUC its first lead of the day, at 2-1.

The Cougar lead would be short lived however, as the Griffins converted a Cougar turnover into a goal about three minutes later.

CUC and Fontbonne would exchange goals once more, until Loeffler tied the game at 3-3 and Combe went on a two-goal tear, to give the Cougars a 5-3 lead heading into the second quarter.  At about 11:38 of the second quarter, Aleks LaTurner picked up a ground ball and forced it downfield for the successful clear. With the ball in the offensive zone, CUC took a timeout and Loeffler converted the next play into a goal off a Krueger assist.

Over the remaining 10 minutes of the half, Krueger and Fiske would score their first goals of the day and solidify CUC's 8-3 lead heading into the halftime break. The Griffins opened up the second half ready to stage a comeback, as Fontbonne scored three consecutive goals to inch within two of the Cougars, down just 8-6.

With 6:56 to go in the quarter, Fiske caused a Griffins' turnover and retrieved the ground ball, taking it all the way to the net to tally his second goal of the day. No less than one minute later, Krueger scored once again to regain a comfortable four-goal lead for CUC, up 10-6 with a few minutes to go in the third.

As each team tallied one more goal before the quarter's conclusion, CUC went on to outscore the Griffins 4-1 in the final frame of play, and pull off the 15-8 win. The Cougars return to action this weekend as they are set to face Earlham College in Richmond, Ind. on Saturday.
