RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- En route to defeating the Cornell Rams 16-9, Concordia-Chicago checked off several program milestones including the most goals ever scored in a single game and most wins in a season, in the team's history.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- With the previous single-game high being 10 goals, during CUC's first ever program win over Carroll University in 2016, the Cougars surpassed the three-year record with a monstrous 16-goal performance this afternoon.
- Freshman Boston Dumas also shattered the program's records for most points and goals scored in a game, as the rookie scored eight goals and finished with nine points.
- With nine saves in nearly 50 minutes of work in net, sophomore Jack Liskey earns his second win of the season and third career win, making him the winningest goalie in a career and a season, in CUC history to date.
Hunter Combe got the Cougars going, as an early penalty allowed CUC to go man-up. Off a dime pass from
Brett Krueger, Combe was able to slip one past Cornell's keeper and grab hold of the early 1-0 lead. Concordia-Chicago never looked back once they gained the lead, as Dumas followed up shortly after Combe with a low riding shot that scorched right through the Rams' defense.
Dumas and Combe would each notch one more goal during the first quarter, in addition to
Jordan Loeffler tabbing his first one of the day to give the Cougars a steady 5-0 lead heading into the second 15-minute frame.
Opening up the second quarter, Dumas earned himself two more points off hot goals before the Rams would even score their first for the day. With a 7-0 lead, Cornell finally marked their first goal at the 7:50 mark. Dumas and Krueger would each have another goal before the quarter ended to push CUC into the halftime break with a comfortable 9-2 lead.
In the first five minutes of the second half, Combe, Loeffler and Dumas nailed three consecutive goals to make it a 12-2 game and mark CUC's historic goal-scoring affair. The Cougars closed out the third quarter with four unanswered goals and needed just 15 minutes of hard defense to secure a victory.
While CUC did not score another goal in the final quarter, the team held off the Rams just enough to ensure the 16-9 victory inside Concordia Stadium.
The Cougars return to action on Wednesday, March 20 at Fontbonne University.
