Last Second Goal Lifts Oglethorpe Past CUC

CINCINNATI -- The Concordia-Chicago men's lacrosse team battled the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe this evening into overtime. Despite a neck and neck first half, CUC saw the light at the end of the tunnel as the team took an 8-6 lead with under 10 minutes to go. Unfortunately, Oglethorpe tied up the game with nine seconds to go and scored the proceeding overtime game-winner to take the game 9-8.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Junior Brett Krueger led the Cougars with five points off three goals and two assists.
  • Freshman Boston Dumas opened up his career with two goals, one assist and six ground balls in his collegiate debut. As the face off guy, Dumas also won 12 of 18 face offs.
  • Sophomore Jack Liskey stopped 17 shots tonight.
  • As a team, the Cougars were 2-3 on extra man opportunities and killed Oglethorpe's one penalty opportunity.
Dumas won the first face off of his career as the Cougars kicked off the evening with the opening possession. The two teams worked to move the ball early, but neither were able to find the back of the net.

Finally at the 6:37 mark, Oglethorpe slipped a goal past keeper Liskey after a defensive miscue for the Cougars, granted the Stormy Petrels a much needed possession.

CUC responded strongly to the early deficit, as Brett Krueger and Hunter Combe scored back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead. However, with less than 20 seconds on the clock for the first quarter, Oglethorpe tacked on another to tie the game back up.

Dumas would continue his solid career debut, as he tallied his first career goal just four seconds after the Cougars went man-up on a Oglethorpe penalty to make the game 3-2.  Despite the Cougars taking smart shots on net, the Stormy Petrels seemed to out shoot CUC on their offensive possessions, and headed into the halftime break up just 5-4. A slow third quarter started off with Oglethorpe tallying a goal less than 90 seconds into the frame. With the goal, the Stormy Petrels led CUC 6-4 creating their largest advantage of the night. Down the stretch, senior Jordan Loeffler scored his first goal of the season, unassisted, to cut CUC's deficit in half heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

Near the 11:30 mark, the Cougars went man-up thanks to an Oglethorpe penalty, which Tate Macfarlane helped Concordia-Chicago capitalize on, as he fired the ball into the back of the net off a hot pass from Krueger. From there, CUC's offense busted open with two more goals from Dumas and Krueger, to command the game 8-7 for the next 10 minutes. While the clock began to expire, the Cougars were near victory until the Stormy Petrels netted a game-tying goal with just nine seconds to go, ultimately forcing an overtime period. Halfway through the overtime frame, Oglethorpe's Brian Green scored the golden goal to win the game in a 9-8 fashion.

The Cougars will return to action next Wednesday at Carroll University at 6 p.m.
