Feb. 6, 2019 - The Concordia-Chicago Cougars came at the host Rockford Regents this evening from different directions and, in the end, the combinations were just too much for Rockford to overcome. The Cougars used a 30-point second quarter and a 20-point third quarter to take control of the game and ultimately beat the Regents by a final score of 79-60.
Crystal Corr got the Cougars off and running as she scored the Cougars' first six points. However, CUC trailed 10-6 late in the quarter when
McKayla Tilton sparked the visitors with her first three of the night. A second triple by Tilton followed a CUC free throw, and suddenly the Cougars had a 13-10 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
In the second quarter, Corr shifted into overdrive. She would finish the first half with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Cougars outscored the Regents 30-22 in a wide-open 10 minutes of play. The Cougars matched some Rockford threes with a couple of timely rainbows of their own.
Kayla Horlacher hit one from deep, and
Kaylah Koehler popped one from the right corner to beat the halftime buzzer and give CUC a 43-32 lead.
In the second half, it was
Deja Southall's turn to lead the parade. Held to just two points in the first half, Southall shot 5-6 from the field and hit all four of her free throws to boost her point total for the game to 16. Again, the long ball provided some good counterpoint for the Cougars, with Tilton hitting a three straight on from a couple feet behind the arc. That capped a 20-point quarter that put Concordia-Chicago in firm control of the game at 63-44.
The fourth quarter saw head coach
Lauren Rosengarden find minutes for virtually the entire roster. Tilton ended the scoring for the night with her fourth three, capping off a 12-point evening.
