CUC Women Off Target in Loss to Dominican

Feb. 9, 2019 - The Concordia-Chicago women's basketball team looked to follow up on a strong outing at Rockford University Wednesday night with another one as they took on Dominican University this afternoon at DU's Igini Sports Forum. A CUC win would not only give them a sweep of the Stars this season but also some needed points in the River Forest Rivalry Cup. However, the Cougars had one of their toughest shooting days of the year in this one, and Dominican pulled away late to down CUC by a final score of 62-51.

Michaela Thornton got CUC going with the first points of the game, but the Stars fought back and would take an 11-10 lead after one quarter. Early in the second, Jada Dixon's follow would give the Cougars a 16-14 lead, but CUC hit a dry spell after that. Dominican scored the next 10 points over the next six-plus minutes, with Samantha Wessel's three giving the home team the lead for good at 19-16. It was not until Sam Bloom, back in the lineup after missing the last two games, scored on a jumper in the lane with eight seconds left in the half, that the Cougars would score again, and they would go to the locker room, trailing 24-18 at the half.

Bloom heated up in the third quarter and led the Cougars on a charge. She hit a three from the left wing for CUC's first three of the day, making the score 28-25. With the score 30-25, the Cougars missed a major opportunity to get back in the game. On a Dominican foul, the Stars also picked up a technical foul. Bloom hit the technical free throws, but CUC missed the two shots for the personal. The Stars then came down and got a basket on a third-chance opportunity. A turnover followed, and then DU's Alisha Markley hit a three to make it an eight-point Stars' lead. Bloom would hit another three before the quarter ended, but CUC still trailed 41-38.

Twice in the fourth quarter, CUC came within two - both times on buckets by Bloom. However, the Cougars then hit another dry spell of nearly five minutes, and the Stars were able to extend their lead to eight. Corr's three-point play with 3:18 left gave CUC a final opening, but the Cougars could not score again until the final minute when Bloom and Kayla Horlacher hit threes.
