WLC Spoils Cougars' Home Opener

River Forest, Ill.-  Concordia University Chicago (1-5; 1-3 NACC) took on Wisconsin Lutheran (4-3; 2-1 NACC) in the 2019-20 home opener. A strong start by the Cougars would not be enough and they would eventually fall 52-40.

Turning Point
In the beginning stages it looked as if CUC would control the pace and tempo of the game. They did so until there was 6:20 seconds left in the third quarter and WLC's Kelly Tramburg hit a three to take the 26-23 lead. After that, the Cougars did not possess another lead.

Inside the Box Score
  • Charisma Robinson (6) would once again lead the Cougars in rebounding, followed by Michaela Thornton (5) and Meghan Long (5).
  • Jaylene Wade would pace the squad in points (15).
  • CUC's largest lead (9) was with 8:37 left in the second quarter.
  • Dominant defense would keep the Cougars close but they would shoot 28.1% from the field and only get to the free throw line four times (50%).
  • WLC outrebounded CUC 48-33.
  • Points in the paint were controlled by the Warriors too, winning by a margin of 30-14.

Quick Summary
  • Charisma Robinson would be the first to score for the Cougars after she made a midrange jumper. WLC followed the CUC bucket up with one of their own immediately after to make it 2-2.
  • Two minutes later the same thing would happen and following a Meghan Long jumper the score would sit at 4-4.
  • Concordia-Chicago would dominate the first quarter from there and finish on a 9-0 run.
  • Bailey Steinkamp gave the Cougars their biggest lead of the second half after a layup assisted by Long.
  • From there the Warriors would battle back and keep it close.
  • CUC's solid defensive performance gave them the big lead, but they struggled to buy a bucket and at the end of the second quarter WLC would be down only 21-19.
  • The Warriors would finally tie the game up with 6:32 left in the third quarter at 23 a piece.
  • Following the lead change, WLC would force a CUC timeout with a 5-0 run and 5:37 remaining.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran would control the whole third quarter and go on a 20-5 run to take a 39-26 lead going into the final frame.
  • In the fourth quarter WLC would extend the lead but, three pointers by Jaylene Wade, and Kaylah Koehler cut the deficit back to 13.
  • With 1:46 left Hastings forced a timeout after a deep three pointer shortened the lead to 10.
  • Concordia-Chicago could not generate enough momentum and would go on to lose by a score of 52-40.
