Cougars Battle, Fall Late to Sabres

Fond du Lac, WI- Concordia University Chicago battled until the final buzzer, but the effort by star freshman Tara Hastings (26 points) would not be enough. The Cougars would lose by a final score of 71-63.

Turning Point
  • CUC held a late 60-55 lead after a Hasting's jumper with 7:19 left in the fourth quarter. Marian would slowly chip into the lead and go on a 16-2 run to close out the remaining time and win.
Inside the Box Score
-The Cougars held many leads, but only outscored the Sabres in the first quarter 16-13.

-Hastings did not only score, she also grabbed seven rebounds and added three steals.
-Five CUC players ended with seven or more rebounds.
-Meghan Long led in the assists category with four.
-Turnovers killed the Concordia attack. They would turn the ball over 25 times.
-Second chance points were a killer for CUC as well, losing by a margin of 24-15.

-One of the main positive takeaways was the ability to score in transition, while holding the Sabres to a measly two fast break points.

Quick Summary
-After one quarter the Cougars led 16-13, showing grit on the offense and defensive ends.
-Kaylah Koehler sparked the offense early with a deep three pointer to extend the lead to 6-2.
-In the second quarter, there was not a clear front-runner. Hastings kept the game close by scoring 13 of her points in the second frame.
-Marian opened the third quarter with two layups and extended the lead to 42-38.
-Michaela Thornton ended the run with a driving layup of her own.
-The largest lead of the game up to that point would come off of a Whitney Jackson three for the Sabres. That three made the score 53-46 with 1:20 left in the third.
-Robinson would take an inside shot and score to close the gap a little bit before the final frame.
-Hastings continued to take over, and within a minute she would hit a three, make two free throws, and record a steal/rebound.
-This would be the largest CUC lead (60-55) but it would not last long, and the Sabres would close out the game with a  16-2 run to end the Cougars chances of a road victory.
