Nov. 16, 2019 – The Concordia-Chicago football Cougars closed out the 2019 campaign today with a contest against Benedictine University. The Cougars hoped to finish the year with a six-win season and a 5-1 road record, both marks their best since the playoff season of 2012. Unfortunately, the Eagles were playing with the hopes of clinching a share of the regular-season conference title, and the home team had everything their way today as they routed the Cougars 44-0 at the Sports Complex in Lisle.
Benedictine received the opening kickoff, but it was CUC finding themselves with an immediate opportunity. On an Eagles' short pass,
Tyler Dudley jarred the ball loose and
Tyler Creamer recovered at the BU 36. Three runs by
Lance Moise picked up the game's initial first down, but the Cougars were stopped moments later on a fourth down at the 24.
The Eagles then turned things around and marched 76 yards over the next eight plays. Kiandre Morris collected the points with a three-yard run, and the home team led 7-0.
After the Eagles' score,
Griffin Beaudette found
Da'Nas Pinellas down the middle, and Pinellas turned the throw into a 56-yard gain. That gave CUC a first down at the 16, but Benedictine's defense held firm and stopped Moise for no gain on a fourth-and-one.
Once again, the Eagles seized the momentum and went 90 yards for their second score. Morris capped the drive with his second touchdown, this one on a 26-yard run around the right side. The home team led 14-0 in the first minute of the second quarter.
The Cougars came back with a strong drive, with Moise converting on a fourth down with a 25-yard run to the Eagles' 12. However, the Cougars were stopped over the next three plays, and
Andrew Lechuga's field goal attempt was no good.
Before the first half was over, the Eagles would add two more scores, one on a 13-yard pass reception by Morris and a 23-yard reception by Ben Moore. The extra point was no good on the final touchdown, but Benedictine led 27-0 at the break.
Semaj James looked to jump-start the CUC offense as he returned the second-half kickoff 35 yards to midfield. The Cougars drove deep into the Eagles' zone, picking up a clutch first down on a 14-yard completion to Pinellas. Two runs by Moise moved the ball to the seven, but the senior would be pushed back on a fourth-and-two.
The Eagles then put together their longest drive of the day, one of 92 yards that ate up almost six minutes of clock. Joshua Williams would score on a two-yard run to make the lead 34-0 after three quarters. Benedictine added another Williams' touchdown and a field goal in the fourth quarter to account for the final score.
The game ended in a frustrating fashion for the Cougars. In the final minute, a 31-yard run by
Tylor Martens took the ball to the six and gave CUC an excellent chance to salvage some points. However, two plays later, a fumbled snap was recovered by the Eagles, and the Cougars' final chance fell by the wayside.
Benedictine amassed 570 yards of offense for the day while CUC recorded 248. Moise recorded one final 100-yard game for his illustrious career, finishing with 106 on 30 carries. Defensively, Creamer made a career-high 13 tackles.
The Cougars finished with an overall record of 5-5, 3-4 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
