WHITEWATER, Wis. – After a season opening win over Rockford, the Concordia University Chicago Women's basketball team hit the road for a tough non-conference weekend at UW-Whitewater. It began this afternoon against the Warhawks, who have appeared in the NCAA tournament the past four seasons. The Cougars struggled offensively, falling by a final score of 75-48.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Michaela Thornton led the way with 17 points. She matched her career high with seven rebounds.
- After making 14 threes in the opener CUC made just three against UWW.
- UWW had four players finish in double figures and shot 45.8 percent from the floor.
Thornton got the Cougars on the board first with a layup one minute in on a putback. Thornton went on to score the first six points for CUC in the half, but the Warhawks held on to a 9-6 lead.
Annika Rae then closed out the first quarter for CUC by getting to the free throw line eight times. She was able to knock down five of them to help CUC pull to an 11-11 tie after the opening ten minutes.
Jaylene Wade got the scoring going for CUC in the second. Whitewater got going offensively, using their size inside to go on a 15-4 run to take a 28-17 lead with 3:11 remaining in the quarter. The Cougars were unable to get the offense going, as the Warhawks extended their lead to 36-22 at the half.
The Warhawks continued to add on early in the third, they were able to extent their lead to 18 before Thornton made a layup with 6:49 remaining in the quarter. CUC got points by
Bailey Steinkamp, Thornton and
Charisma Robinson in the quarter, but found themselves trailing 54-35 after three.
Thornton continued her strong night to open the fourth with a layup. CUC had their best shooting quarter of the night, but it was not enough, falling by a final score of 75-48.
