Cougars Down Inferno For Fourth Straight Home Win

River Forest, Ill. – Continuing their push for the NACC playoffs, the Concordia University Chicago Women's Basketball team looked to make it four straight wins at home tonight against the Alverno Inferno. The Cougars were able to do so behind their best shooting night of the season. The Cougars never trailed, picking up their fourth straight home win by a final score of 81-57.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • CUC shot 52.3 percent on the night, their best shooting night since December 2, 2017.
  • The Cougars shot 45.8 percent from three, knocking down 11 triples.
  • Sam Bloom finished with 16 points on 5-8 shooting from deep.
  • Crystal Corr was all over the floor, finishing with 12 points and nine boards.
  • Michaela Thornton went 7-12 from the floor for 15 points to go along with four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
 
In the first, the two teams started off slow from the field. CUC broke through on a second chance layup by Corr to get things started. The Cougars then used a 9-0 just a few minutes later to open a 15-4 lead midway through the quarter. Bloom started the run with a three, and Thornton and Jada Dixon followed with jumpers to expand the lead. Alverno was able to trim the CUC lead a bit late, but the Cougars were still able to hold a 22-12 lead after one.


Bloom and Rae were able to keep the long ball rolling for CUC early in the second. A Bloom three extended the Cougar lead to 38-23 with 5:45 remaining the quarter. Alverno was able to answer with a run to pull back within eight on a Sara Redlin three. CUC was able to recover with a 7-0 run to close the half that was culminated on a Kayla Horlacher three that gave CUC a 45-30 lead as time was winding down in the half.
 

CUC opened the second half by continuing the run. Threes by Horlacher and Maddie Vojacek sandwiched a Corr layup that expanded the CUC lead to 23. Alverno cut the CUC lead back to 19, but the Cougars answered with a run once again. They were able to rip off an 11-0 run, powered by seven points by Thornton. CUC continued to lead 67-38 after three.
 

In the fourth, the Cougars were able to keep their comfortable lead. Bloom knocked down her fifth three of the day early in the quarter to keep the lead at 29. Marie Baumgartner and Ashley Measel were able to get in on the scoring in the quarter as the Cougars cruised to an 81-57 victory.
 

The Cougars will hit the road now for the rest of January. They will head to MSOE on Saturday to take on the Raiders. Opening tip is set for 2:00pm.
