Cougar Women Win Big Over IIT

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Looking to win their third straight at home, the Concordia University Chicago Women's Basketball team welcomed the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks into Geiseman for the first time since 2004 on Saturday afternoon. A 15-4 first quarter in favor of CUC set the tone as the Cougars downed the Scarlet Hawks by a 64-44 final score
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
 
  • CUC forced a season high 34 IIT turnovers that resulted in 36 points.
  • McKayla Tilton had a big day, scoring a season high 14 points on 4-7 shooting from three.
  • Sam Bloom was 5-10 from the field and had 12 points.
  • Maddie Vojacek had a strong outing, securing nine rebounds and seven points.
  • CUC shot a season high .335 from behind the arc.
 
 
In the first, CUC went on a 14-0 run to gain the early momentum. Four straight threes, coming off the hands of Kayla Horlacher, Vojacek and Annika Rae (2) helped power the run. CUC continue to play strong defense throughout the quarter, taking a 15-4 lead into the second.
 
CUC got the offense going again in the second quarter. Vojacek started things with a jumper. Bloom and Ashley Measel followed with baskets, ballooning the CUC lead to 15. After a short IIT run, five straight points by Tilton extended the CUC lead to 16. IIT was able to slowly chip away the rest of the quarter, cutting the Cougar lead to 33-22 at the half.
 
IIT came out of the locker room and was able to cut the CUC lead down to seven early in the quarter. CUC followed with a 7-0 run with baskets by Vojacek, Jada Dixon and Michaela Thornton. The Cougars made their lead 16 once again on a Bloom three with 2:43 remaining in the quarter. CUC made a big splash late in the quarter with an 8-0 run which included two Tilton threes to give CUC a 53-30 lead at the end of three.
Tilton continued to add to her total in the fourth by knocking down her fourth three of the day. CUC also got baskets in the quarter by Thonton and Measel as CUC was able to cruise to their third straight home victory by a 64-44 final score.
The Cougars will look to make it four straight at home when they welcome Alverno Inferno to Geiseman Gymnasium on Wednesday night. Opening tip is set for 7:00pm.
