Cougars Sail Past MSOE

Milwaukee, Wis.- Looking to get things going in conference play, the Concordia University Chicago Cougars headed to the Kern center to take on the MSOE Raiders in a key NACC contest tonight. The Cougars put together arguably their most dominating performance of the season, using 18 aces in the match to sail past the Raiders in straight sets.
 
In set one, the Cougars jumped out early 5-1 lead with three kills by Jaylynn Johnson with Jennifer Livesay serving. MSOE worked their way back, taking a 7-6 lead, but the Cougars had an answer. A 4-0 run which was powered by four aces by Shannon Stamp gave CUC the lead back at 10-7. CUC was able to build their lead out to 16-9 midway through the set with kills by Spitelli and aces by Nicoletta Crowley and Julia Beers. CUC was able to cruise the rest of the way, getting a Stamp kill off the right side to seal set one 25-17.




 
CUC rode the momentum into set two. Strong serving my Livesay helped CUC to jump out to an early 5-1 lead. With Stamp serving once again, the Cougars built their advantage out to 12-2 with a 7-0 run. The Cougars never let their foot off the gas, using aces again by Crowley and Beers to help extend the lead to 17-5. CUC was able to keep a comfortable advantage in the set, using a block by Johnson and Chloe Martin to seal set two 25-14.




 
The Cougars kept the pressure on in set three. MSOE led CUC at 4-3 when the Cougars used another big 7-0 run with Stamp serving once again. CUC continued to build on the advantage with kills by Spitelli and Livesay, which extended the lead to 13-5. MSOE was able to get back within 15-9 when CUC was able to put the match out of the Raiders reach. With Elise Sombke behind the service line, the Cougars built the advantage back out to 19-9. CUC was able to cruise from there, using a kill by Stamp and two kills by Spitelli to secure the match by taking set three 25-12.
 
Johnson and Spitelli led CUC with seven kills each. Stamp led CUC with seven aces on the night, followed by Livessay with four. Crowley dished out 21 assists on the night, and Sombke led the team with ten digs.
 
The Cougars will kick off homecoming week on the road on Tuesday night. CUC will travel to Lisle to take on the Benedictine Eagles. Opening serve is set for 7:00pm.
