Opening up: The Concordia University Chicago Cougars open their 2018 conference schedule on the road tonight at Dominican University. The Cougars came just a single game short of qualifying for the conference tournament last season. CUC looks to get off to a fast start in conference play, after going 4-0 over the weekend at Northland College.
Â
Recent History: The Cougars and Stars squared off in a match for the ages last season inside Geiseman Gymnasium in front of a packed house. The Cougars took the first two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-21 to bring the Cougar faithful to their feet. Unfortunately, Dominican was able to counter by taking the last three sets, including a nail biting fourth set 27-25.
Jaylynn Johnson led CUC with 15 kills on the night.
Â
About the Cougars: The Concordia Chicago Cougars come into the matchup with Dominican on a four-game winning streak. CUC defended their title at the Northland College Tournament by defeating three of their opponents in straight sets, and defeating a tough St.Catherine team by coming back from a two set deficit.
Shannon Stamp and
Nicoletta Crowley were named to the all-tournament team for CUC. Stamp hit .520 on the weekend with 43 kills to just four errors. Stamp currently ranks first in the NACC in hitting percentage at .382.
Â
About the Stars: The Dominican University Stars come in 4-5 overall on the season. The Stars opened up winning three of four at the Ground Round Sugar Loaf Classic in Winona, Minnesota, but have dropped four of their last five. This will be the first home contest of the year for Dominican who went 5-3 inside the Igini Sports Forum last year. Gabija Sinickaite has been the top performer offensively for the Stars, hitting at a .271 clip with 76 kills on the season. Anastasia Labadessa is the main setter for Dominican with 256 assists. She has been equally as impressive behind the service line, with 28 aces on the season.
Â
