Lisle, Ill.- Concordia Chicago concluded the 2018 season this afternoon on the road when they took on Benedictine University. The Cougars started off hot in the first half, but saw their lead quickly vanish as the Eagles were able to tie it at six heading into halftime. The second half brought both offenses trying to generate shots and opportunities. Luckily for CUC, they capitalized more time than BenU and was able to inch out the 8-7 victory over the Eagles.
The Cougars were led by Anna Kellar who had four goals, five groundballs, two caused turnovers, and four draw controls on the afternoon. Sydney Fuller followed that up with a goal and four assists for a total of five points on the day.
To start the game, the Cougars got off to a blistering start. Within the first five minutes, CUC was already up 4-1. The big three in Margaret Doane, Kellar, and Fuller were responsible for those goals. Benedictine got one back midway through the half, but Concordia Chicago quickly regained the momentum. Doane and Kellar once again got the Cougars on the scoreboard. Elizabeth Cyrwus hit Doane on a cut through the middle of the field to give CUC a 6-2 lead. That lead quickly evaporated as the Eagles offense went into beast mode scoring four goals in a five minute span to tie CUC at six heading into halftime.
The second half was a defensive grind for both teams. CUC's goalkeeper Krystal Phillips was fantastic in stopping multiple great scoring opportunities from the Eagles. BenU took their first lead ten minutes into the half, but again, CUC responded. After the Benedictine goal, the Cougars took the next draw and Kellar went down the field to tie the game up within ten seconds on a free position goal. That goal for Kellar, gave her 100 career goals, which marks the first player in the program's history to do so. Seconds later, Doane did the same and CUC took a one goal lead. The rest of the game was the Cougars defense stopping the Eagles attack and Phillips coming up with big stops to earn Concordia Chicago the 8-7 win.
Concordia-Chicago (6-11, 5-6 MWLC) wrapped up the 2018 season on a very high note winning three straight games and four out of their last five.
