River Forest, Ill. – Playing on back-to-back days for the first time since the opening Florida trip, the Concordia University Chicago Cougars took to the field again today against the rival Dominican University Stars. The Cougars felt heartbreak in game one, seeing a two run lead disappear in the seventh to fall 7-6. The Stars then used that momentum to take down CUC in game two 8-0.
In game one, the Stars held a 2-0 over CUC until the fourth inning. The Cougars got things started with back-to-back walks to begin the inning. A double steal and an out later,
Sydney Getz delivered a two RBI single to left center to tie the game at two.
The Cougars then took advantage of multiple Dominican miscues in the sixth to take the lead. A single by
Stefanie D'Anna and an error put two on for
Allison Kruk, who launched a double to right center scoring two. Back-to-back singles by
Taylor Kulaszewicz and
Katie Sullivan brought home runs, with errors allowing them to take the extra base and extend the Cougar lead to 6-2.
Unfortunately for CUC, Dominican was able to work two runs back in the sixth on one hit and two walks. They then used a keen eye in the seventh to work three walks to load the bases for two outs. Ali Woitovich played the role of hero for the Stars, lifting a 3-2 pitch off the wall in center field, scoring all three runs for the walkoff 7-6 win.
Kruk and Getz paced the CUC offense with two hits and two runs each.
In game two, the Stars used their momentum from game one to score six runs in the first three innings to keep all momentum on their side. Dominican added two more in the fifth to take game two by a final score of 8-0. Sydney Kuderna worked all five innings for the Stars, limiting CUC to just three hits.
The Cougars (14-9; 5-3 NACC) will continue their stretch of eight games in four days tomorrow when they host Edgewood College tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30pm.
