River Forest, Ill.- The Concordia University Chicago Men's Lacrosse team faced off against Monmouth College in the first game back home since March 14. CUC looked to gain a little momentum with only two more weeks left in the season. Monmouth used a seven goal first quarter lead to create a good lead over the Cougars. CUC played better in quarters two through four, but it was not enough as the Fighting Scots won by the final score of 15-5.
Hunter Combe led the Cougars with two goals on the afternoon. To go along with his two goals, he also had six groundballs and two caused turnovers. Jordan Loeffler and Benjamin Lang each had a goal and an assist.
From the opening face-off, Monmouth controlled the pace of the game after they scored three straight goals in four minutes to force a Cougar timeout. Concordia-Chicago had a prime scoring opportunity in the first frame when Loeffler dinged the post, just missing a goal. Other than the Loeffler post-shot, the Cougars defense was in action for most of the first half. At the end of the first half the score sat at 8-0 with the Fighting Scots in the lead.
Hot out the halftime break, CUC struck first with a goal to make it 10-1. Combe found his way around the defense and fired a quick shot from five yards out, the assist came from Lang. Lang helped himself to a goal after a shot ricocheted off the post and ended up in his possession. With a minute left in the third quarter, Loeffler cashed in on a scoring opportunity with a goal from ten yards out. During the quarter, Concordia-Chicago kept it close. The score through the quarter alone was 3-3, but the Cougars needed a little more firepower to climb out of the 11-3 deficit they dug into.
In the final fifteen minutes of play, DeMond Menefee zipped by a crowd of Fighting Scots' defenders and netted his first goal of the game. The Cougars stayed resilient, and Combe scored off of a beautiful pass coming from Lang to shrink the lead to nine. As the final two minutes of regulation wrapped up, both teams' defenses stood strong and the final score was 15-5 Monmouth.
Concordia-Chicago (1-10, 0-5 MLC) looks to bounce back in their upcoming matchup against University of Northwestern (MN) on Friday, April 13. Face-off is set for 1:00pm.
