Cougars Come Up Short In Home Run Showdown With Stout

River Forest, Ill. – The Concordia University Chicago Cougars Softball team took to the field one final time before Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play kicks off tomorrow. They would take on the University of Wisconsin-Stout on a brisk Friday morning. Both teams swung hot bats though, knocking out seven home runs on the day. Unfortunately one final blast for Stout was enough to down CUC by a final score of 9-8.

Marita Van Dyke, Sydney Getz, Melissa Balkema and Shania Phillips all homered on the day. Phillips' blast was a grand slam that momentairally gave CUC the lead in the sixth. Karlee Knight worked the first two innings inside the circle for CUC allowing one run. Van Dyke and Julianne Nation followed, allowing eight runs on nine hits.

Stout took the early lead, plating a run on a solo homerun in the second. The Blue Devils doubled the lead on a two out single in the third. They then made it 4-0 on two hits in the fourth.

CUC battled back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The scoring started with back-to-back homeruns by Van Dyke to left center and Getz to center. Kristen Landon kept things going drawing a walk. Two outs later with Taylor Kulaszewicz on second, Sydney Sterrett singled to center, allowing Kulaszewicz to race around to score.

The Cougars tied the game in the fifth. With one out, Balkema launched a high fly home run to left field on a 3-2 pitch to make it 4-4. CUC used the long ball again in the sixth to take the lead. With one out, Kulaszewicz singled up the middle. Yasmine Fox and Sterrett followed with singles up the middle to load the bases. One out later, Phillips homered to left field, a no-doubter off the bat, making it 8-4 Cougars.

Unfortunately for CUC, UW-Stout was able to counter with two long balls themselves in the seventh. The first was two run shot with one away. The second, a three run shot to left center that gave Stout the lead back for good at 9-8.

The Cougars (9-6) will now ready for NACC play which begins tomorrow afternoon. CUC will travel to Milwaukee to take on MSOE. First pitch is set for 1:00pm
