St. Louis, MO. – After an impressive performance in the season opener, the Concordia University Chicago Women's Basketball team played their second of four straight contests away from home tonight at the Cavallo Invitational hosted at Webster University. The Cougars held a slim 22-19 lead at the half, but Spalding University was able to put enough offense together to down the Cougars 60-44.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Michaela Thornton had 16 points on the night, one shy of her career high on 7-15 shooting.
- Crystal Corr had a career high 15 rebounds on the night. She also matched her career high with five blocks.
- Sam Bloom had a team high four steals on the night to go along with eight points.
- CUC struggled shooting the ball, shooting 32.7 percent on the night, while going just 6-16 from the free throw line.
In the first quarter, Thornton provided the offensive spark, scoring the first eight points for the Cougars to give CUC the early 8-7 lead. Bloom got in the action with a three, and Corr gave CUC a 14-12 advantage after the opening quarter with a layup and free throw.
Both teams struggled to get the offense going in the second quarter. Bloom got things going with a three. Spalding was able to take a brief lead, but an
Ashley Measel free throw and an
Annika Rae layup gave CUC the lead back. A final Thornton free throw gave the Cougars a 22-19 lead at the half.
Coming out of the half, Thornton gave the Cougars their largest lead of the night with a jumper off the wing. The CUC offense then fell flat, not netting another basket till Corr hit a jumper with 1:56 remaining in the quarter. Spalding made their run during the quarter, taking a 33-30 lead after three quarters.
The fourth quarter was the highest scoring for both teams. Spalding built their lead to seven before Rae converted a layup. Spalding continued to keep their offense rolling, building their advantage to 15 with 6:26 remaining. CUC tried to battle back, but could not get back within ten, falling by a final score of 60-44.
