Box Score River Forest, IL - Concordia-Chicago took on Aurora University on Homecoming weekend, with CUC looking to rebound from a tough loss at Lakeland University last weekend. In the first half, the Cougars fell behind early and went into halftime down 21-10. They tried to regain their footing in the second half but simply ran out of time in a 35-30 defeat.
Â
Starting the game, both teams made a defensive stand. After CUC made the second stop of the game, a muffed punt plagued their potential drive and gave Aurora good field position. Aurora would capitalize off of the field position and with 8:37 left in the first they would draw first blood. Another dry possession by the Cougars would be combated by a scoring drive from the Spartans to make it 14-0.
On the next drive, Griffin Beaudette came through with a clutch pass on fourth-and-16 to Corey Dooley to keep the drive alive. Lance Moise then took over from there and punched it in for his tenth rushing touchdown of the year from 10 yards out to make it 14-7.
Â
Concordia-Chicago found themselves back on offense to start the second quarter after a big three-and-out from the defense. Moise came into the game needing 76 yards to hit the 1,000-yard mark for the season, and he reached that mark early in the quarter, becoming one of 15 rushers in NCAA history to reach that plateau by the fifth game of the season. Moise's rushing would help lead CUC to a field goal by Orlando Hayes, shrinking the lead to 14-10. Aurora quickly answered with their third touchdown drive to extend the lead to 21-10. CUC would put together a solid drive, moving it 73 yards in seven plays, but they were forced to punt.
Â
Beginning the second half, the Cougars' defense allowed another long Spartans' drive that ended in a score, but they would answer back immediately. Beaudette fired a pass to Eric Hoff, who would then take it to the house from 39 yards out and bring the score to 28-17.
With 1:49 left in the third quarter, the CUC offense shrunk the lead to 35-23 after a Beaudette passing touchdown to Da'Nas Pinellas from nine yards out. The Cougars pulled closer in the fourth, facing a fourth-down conversion at the 15-yard line. Jordan Sepulveda found Hoff on a screen pass, and Hoff juked his way to the end zone to make the score 35-30. CUC would run out of time, and the score would end at 35-30.
