Oct. 27, 2018 -Â Concordia-Chicago faced off against Rockford University in week eight of the season. The Cougars were looking to get it rolling again after a rough stretch of games, and they would not be denied today. It took just one half of play for CUC to establish firm control of the game on both sides of the ball, and they would roll to a 41-13 victory over the Regents in River Forest.Â
Â
Rockford received the opening kickoff and drove to the CUC 20 before Rodolfo Payan and Caleb Casey hauled down the Regents' quarterback on a fourth-down play. Concordia-Chicago then struck like lightning on the first play from scrimmage. Jordan Sepulveda threw deep to a streaking Da'Nas Pinellas, who would speed past the whole defense for an 80-yard touchdown. However, on the ensuing possession, Rockford powered it down the field with the help of a pass interference call and evened the score at 7-7 on a one-yard run by LaVar Johnson Jr..
Today's game saw the return of Lance Moise to the lineup after he had missed the previous two games. The Cougars called Moise's number often on their second drive, and it would result in the go-ahead touchdown drive. The highlight of the drive came as Moise picked up the team with a 28-yard run after they had been pushed back on a 15-yard penalty. Moise then scored on the next play from eight yards out to cap the 70-yard drive and give CUC a 14-7 lead.
The Cougars got the ball back early in the second quarter, and Sepulveda took them to the end zone in a six-play 47-yard drive, capping it himself with a display of shiftiness and elusiveness on a 19-yard touchdown run for a 21-7 lead.
Rockford looked to make their way back into the game, but that was turned away by another big defensive play. Demetrius Rufus tipped the ball in the air in coverage, and Casey came through with the huge interception and a return into RU territory. The Cougars would move into field goal range, and Orlando Hayes would end the drive with a 34-yarder through the uprights for a 24-7 advantage.
Right before the end of the first half, Concordia-Chicago would add yet another touchdown. Moise scampered in from two yards out to cap a 70-yard drive and push the lead to 31-7 going into the break.
Â
Sepulveda and the offense did not lose any momentum from the first half to the second, as they took the opening drive down field. It culminated in Sepulveda's second scoring run of the day, this one from two yards out.
Later in the third, the Cougars added one more score as Hayes booted a 23-yard field goal. Rockford would score the final points of the game, however, as Ja'uan Joiner took the kickoff after the field goal and ran it back 86 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was blocked by Shakur Williams, leaving the score at CUC 41, Rockford 13. Â
Â
Concordia-Chicago amassed 475 yards of offense to Rockford's 346. Sepulveda and Griffin Beaudette combined for 226 yards on 15 of 19 passing, while Moise ran for 128 yards on 16 carries. Rockford quarterbacks Eric Mackey and Delayno Mack combined for 187 yards on 16-30 passing, while Chance Manning ran 17 times for 81 yards.
Defensive leaders included, for CUC, Casey with 10 tackles (five solo), a forced fumble and the interception, and Payan, Thaddous Daniel Jr., and Tyler Dudley each with seven total tackles. For Rockford, Jallen Bashford was credited with 17 tackles (10 solo), and Jared Johnson made nine (five solo).
The Cougars (2-6, 1-4 NACC) will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 3 in Milwaukee to battle against Wisconsin Lutheran College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
