RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- In the women's soccer rendition of the Division Street Rivalry, the Dominican University Stars clipped the Concordia-Chicago Cougars with a 2-0 shut out victory.
The first half quickly proved to be a physical match up, with only four shots taking place during the first 45 minutes of play. CUC's back line kept heavy pressure on the Stars, allowing just three shots from its first place NACC foe.
The opening minutes of the second half once again showcased both team's physicality, but Dominican began to pick up the pace of the game. With 32 minutes left in regulation, and the game still scoreless, Star Ashleigh Huerta nearly broke through with two quick shots. However, a clutch save by goalkeeper
Madeline Kroll followed by a huge defensive block from
Emma Stone shut down the Dominican burst.
As the game progressed, it seemed like neither team would be able to score before an overtime period was needed. But, with 13 minutes to go, Huerta made a clean cross to teammate Josseline Williams, in front of the box, as she was able to head the ball into the back of the net and give her team the 1-0 lead. Williams wouldn't be done for the day as she would also execute on a penalty kick at the 85:37 mark and solidify the Dominican victory.Â
Today's match up served as the Cougars' annual Pink Out game, where the team raised over $700 and donated it to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
CUC will return to action this Saturday to take on Concordia Wisconsin in Mequon.Â
