Sept. 2, 2017 - The Concordia University Chicago men's soccer team took the field this Saturday against the Concordia University Ann Arbor Cardinals in the final game of the 2017 Men's Soccer CIT. The Cougars were looking to grab their first win of the season, while the Cardinals hwent in with a record of 1-1. The sun peaked out for the start of the match to see the promising CUC squad go to battle after an impressive showing against Concordia Nebraska. Unfortunately for the Cougars, an early goal would not hold up, as they fell to CUAA 2-1.
Quick on the trigger, the Cougars drew first blood with a goal from junior Ricardo Aragon, coming off an assist from Fabian Robles on a shot from the right side that slid under the CUAA goalie. The Cougar offense ignited the crowd and rode the momentum of the goal into the half with a 1-0 lead.
Thanks to great offensive play during the rest of the half, the Cougars were able to continuously put pressure on the Concordia University Ann Arbor goalkeeper and keep the ball in Cardinal territory. When the ball broke through into Cougar territory, the CUC defense was a brick wall, especially senior goalie Roberto Aragon who made countless great saves to help preserve the lead.
Riding into the second half on a high note, the Cougars looked to add to their lead. In the 53rd minute though, the Cardinals made the lead disappear with a shot that went from left to right across the box and found the net for Phillip Vrzoski to even the score at 1-1.
From there, Concordia Ann-Arbor seized more momentum after a deflected shot was one-touched in by Joshua Posuniak in the 61st minute to give CUAA the lead for good.
With the final score of 2-1, the Cardinals of Concordia Ann-Arbor leave the weekend with a record of 2-1 while the Concordia-Chicago Cougars unfortunately leave the weekend 0-2, despite two great showings. They pick back up next Saturday in a match against Webster University at home to close out their three-game home stand.
