April 12, 2017 - The Cougar men's lacrosse team returned to Midwest Lacrosse Conference play this evening with a match at Benedictine University. The Cougars turned in a hard-fought effort in a match turned physical at times, but the host Eagles ran away with a 28-4 victory.
Brett Krueger had the first scoring opportunity of the night for either team, his shot going high. Benedictine then came down the field and made good on their first chance by David Blanco 1:12 into the game. The Eagles stretched their lead to 3-0 before
Corey Sheehan got CUC on the board with his 10th goal of the season
at the 4:31 mark. However, that would be the Cougars' only tally of the quarter, as the Eagles controlled play territorially through the rest of the quarter and claimed a 9-1 lead after the first 15 minutes.Â
The pace slowed a bit in the second quarter, the Eagles outscoring the Cougar 4-0, although CUC had some opportunities, thanks to a few man-up opportunities, However, Sheehan's early tally remained CUC's only goal of the half as Benedictine held a 32-12 advantage in shots and 13-1 on the scoreboard.
A rough beginning to the third quarter saw Benedictine score the first four goals, but Concordia-Chicago got a burst of energy midway through the quarter.
Jacob Karmia finished off a possession with a low missile from 20 yards out for his third goal in the last two games. Just over a minute later, it was
Brett Krueger from close in recording his team-leading 14th of the season. However, the Eagles bounced back to score the next three and end the third quarter with a 20-3 advantage.
Jordan Loeffler scored 1:20 into the fourth quarter off an assist from
Aaron Abraham. The game got out of hand from there, however, as a deep Benedictine bench was able to capitalize on a tired Cougar defense and cruise to a 28-4 win.
The Cougars (0-10) will continue MLC play on Saturday when they travel to Concordia University Wisconsin.Â
