March 22, 2017 - A four-game home stand continued today for the Concordia University Chicago men's lacrosse team as they hosted Trine University of Indiana. Although skies were bright and sunny, the Cougars' situation was clouded as a series of injuries left them without any depth to speak of for this match. This was a major factor against a Trine team that was one of the deeper teams the Cougars have faced, and the result was a 23-5 victory for the Thunder.
The Cougars were game in the early going, and after Trine scored the opening goal four minutes in, CUC needed just 50 seconds to even the score.
Jordan Loeffler circled behind the net before he spotted
Corey Sheehan coming in from the left. Sheehan received the pass, took a step and fired past the Trine goalie to knot the game at 1-1. The Thunder scored the next three goals, but Sheehan found the net again in the final minute of the quarter to make the score Trine 4, CUC 2.
The second quarter proved to be the Cougars' undoing in this contest, starting with Tyler Klima's goal for Trine just eight seconds after the faceoff. The Thunder would score 10 goals in the 15 minutes, interrupted only by
Brett Krueger's team-leading seventh goal of the season off Loeffler's second assist of the game. However, the Cougars were already feeling the
stress of playing a full 30-minute half, and the scoreboard had them looking up at a 14-3 deficit at the half.
Nothing got easier for the Cougars in the second half, although Sheehan finished off his hat trick with a goal in the third quarter. Loeffler also recorded his third goal of the season to end the scoring. Krueger provided the assist on the tally.
Trine (3-2) finished with a 67-13 advantage in shots with CUC goalie
Eric Pankey making a career-high 20 saves.
Concordia-Chicago (0-5) will have a week off to rest and recuperate before hosting DePauw University on March 29 at 1 p.m.
