March 12, 2017 - It was a tough way for a three-game road trip to Michigan end as the Concordia-Chicago women's lacrosse team saw a two-goal lead get away late and lose in overtime to host Alma College 9-8. However, the loss could not take away the good things that came out of the trip, according to CUC head coach
Brian Patterson.
"We had two great wins at Trine and Olivet, and we could have won this one today but for a few things that happened near the end," said Patterson. "We lost to Alma by 15 last year, and give them credit for getting it done today, but I thought we were the better team today. The better team didn't win today in my opinion, the better team got a little unlucky."
As the Cougars continue to play well together, they are also developing a few dangerous goal scorers. Last Tuesday, it was
Sydney Fuller who recorded a six-goal game. Today, it was
Anna Kellar who found the net a half-dozen times. Kellar got the Cougars started after the Scots had taken an early 2-0 lead, scoring twice within 32 seconds to draw CUC even. Alma scored the next goal, but Fuller soon evened it up. However, the Scots got the draw control and scored just eight seconds after Fuller's goal, and the home team led 4-3 at the half.
The second-half scoring opened less than six minutes in as Alma went up by two. Less than a minute later, however,
Margaret Doane started a 4-0 run for the Cougars. Kellar followed with two goals over the next two minutes, both assisted by Fuller, and Kellar then struck at the 17:42 mark to make the score CUC 7, Alma 5. The Scots answered back with a goal at the midway point of the half to make it a one-goal game.
As the clock ticked under the 10-minute mark, the defenses toughened up. When Kellar scored her sixth at the 6:54 mark, it looked like the Cougars were close to wrapping up win number three, However, another quick response by the Scots got them back within one just 18 seconds after Kellar's goal. Then, Shelby Frazer's goal 85 seconds later on the man-up situation evened the score and eventually sent the game into overtime.
The overtime was a quiet affair with Alma recording the only two shots, and the second one was the one that counted. Frazer scored her second with just 53 seconds remaining for the deciding goal.
"This trip was a statement for us and to our opponents that we are not an automatic win for them," said Patterson. "We're going to keep working and growing together, and now we're excited about playing three games this week before our home crowd. We feel that if we play our best, there's not a team we can't beat."
