Cougar Men Snowed Under in Kalamazoo

March 1, 2017 - The Concordia-Chicago men's lacrosse team took to the field in Kalamazoo, MI tonight, looking to build on the progress made from game one to game two last week. However, the field had a coating of white after some pre-game snow, giving the Cougars their first test this season in inclement weather conditions. The Cougars played some good stretches tonight, but a six-goal second quarter for the Hornets was the ultimate difference in the game as Kalamazoo recorded the 12-5 victory.

The first quarter was played tentatively at first with both teams testing each other out as well as the overall feel of the turf. Corey Sheehan and Aaron Abraham took CUC's first two shots, with Sheehan's being saved by KC's netminder and Abraham's going wide. The Hornets stepped up the pace and forced the Cougars to kill a man-up opportunity midway through the quarter. Concordia's goalie Eric Pankey made four saves in the first 15 minutes, although Kalamazoo did slip one shot past him late in the quarter to lead 1-0 after one.

Kalamazoo continued to ride the momentum as the second quarter got underway. The Hornets played their most complete stretch of the game, scoring five consecutive goals over the first 10 1/2 minutes. Finally, the Cougars got on the board with 2:50 remaining as freshman DeMond Menefee found the net for his first collegiate goal. The Cougars looked to take that little bit of momentum into halftime, but the Hornets came up with a goal in the final three seconds to lead 7-1 at the halfway point.

Momentum stalled for both teams in the third quarter as just one goal was scored by the home team. The fourth quarter was a different story, however, as each team put four in the back of the net. Jacob Karmia tallied early on a man-up situation for his team-leading fourth goal of the season. After the Hornets scored to make it a 9-2 game, Sheehan scored his second in as many games and Menefee his second of the game to pull the Cougars within five with plenty of time still remaining. However, the Hornets scored the next two goals to take the wind out of CUC's sails. Concordia's final goal came courtesy of Loeffler, his second of the season.

The final stat sheet showed Kalamazoo with a 46-25 advantage in shots. Pankey made a total of 13 saves for the match.

Concordia will now enjoy a lengthy break before resuming play. Their next action is scheduled for March 18 when they host the University of Dubuque.  .
