Cougars Shoot Lights Out In Wild West Showdown

Claremont, Calif.- Looking to get things going after a tough home stretch, the Concordia University Chicago Cougars took to the floor out west for a non-conference game tonight against the University of La Verne Leopards. Both teams looked to push the pace, and it was CUC who used the pace for a 112 point outburst which broke the programs' previous best of 105 which was set at Rockford earlier this season.

Taylor Jacobsen led CUC (6-2, 3-2 NACC) with 26 points. Crystal Corr recorded a career high 18 points along with 12 rebounds for the second double-double of her career. Michaela Thornton also recorded a career high 17 points on the night. As a team five players finished in double figures as the Cougars shot 51 percent from the floor while knocking down 15 threes. The CUC came out strong as well, limiting La Verne (2-6, 1-1 SCIAC) to 28 percent shooting on the night.

CUC opened the game with a quick Courtney Lofink layup off the opening tip and the teams were off to the races. The Cougars trailed early in the first quarter until an Annika Rae three and a Corr layup tied the game at 11 just over two minutes in. A Maddie Vojacek jumper gave CUC the lead and the Cougars continued to put their foot on the gas. Lofink made it 24-14 on a three midway through the quarter but La Verne cut the CUC lead to 27-23 at the end of the first.

Lisa Lubben and Vojacek helped CUC to build the lead back to 10 early in the second quarter. The Leopards continued to hang around but threes by Thornton and Horlacher helped to send CUC to the locker room leading 55-44 at the half.

In the third quarter T.Jacobsen extended the CUC lead to 15 with a three off the wing that forced a La Verne timeout. Erin Jacobsen continued the trend with a three of her own with 3:08 remaining in the quarter. Again it would be E.Jacobsen with the layup with 11 seconds remaining in the quarter that pushed the Cougar lead to 82-61 after three quarters.

The fourth quarter featured the same dominance by CUC. Allison Barry got things started with a layup, while Thornton continued her strong effort. A Thornton layup with 3:21 put CUC over the century mark for the second time this season. The Cougars continued to hit shots, breaking the record of 105 point in a game set earlier this season on a E.Jacobsen layup, leading to the 112-73 final score.

The Cougars will fly home tomorrow as the team will take the next few days off to spend with family for Christmas. They then will ready for NACC play when they head to Marian on December 30.
