River Forest, Ill.- Concordia-Chicago returned to action this afternoon against Edgewood. The Cougars looked to get back on track after a disappointing loss to Benedictine this past Monday. Unfortunately in a tough back and forth game, the Eagles answered every attempt from CUC in their 72-69 win.
Taylor Jacobsen led the Cougars in scoring with 17 points (6-21), five rebounds, and three assists. Followed by Courtney Lofink who finished with 14 points (5-8), four rebounds, and six assists.
The Cougars came out fast and hungry grabbing an early lead with four different players scoring. T. Jacobsen with her patented dribble drives to the basket and an Annika Rae three from the left wing gave the Cougars a 11-5 lead. Late in the quarter, CUC started getting sloppy with turnovers and their perimeter defense was poor, which led for the Eagles to cut the Cougars lead to 13-12 after one quarter of play.
The beginning of the second quarter continued to be sloppy for the Cougars as the Eagles were able to capitalize on mistakes to take a five point lead. The bench for CUC brought them back to a tie on a Lisa Lubben three and a Maddie Vojacek elbow jumper. Late in the quarter, the Cougars were able to take the lead back with back to back threes from Lofink and Sarah Ludwig. Concordia-Chicago closed out the half on a 9-2 run to take a 35-30 lead heading into halftime.
Third quarter displayed some poor shooting on easy looks from the Cougars. The Eagles took advantage of CUC playing too fast when Edgewood got out to their largest of the night of seven points. Not much between that and the Eagles closed out the quarter with a 57-51 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Crystal Carr started to get the Cougars back in the game with a layup underneath and two free throws. Concordia-Chicago cut the lead to one on a T. Jacobsen three that rattled home. CUC was able to tie the game midway through the quarter, but the Eagles continued to play well and hit a huge three the following possession and a layup to take a five point lead with three minutes remaining. It came down to the final possession when the Eagles were up three with six seconds left. The Cougars had two good looks to tie the game, but came up short with the Eagles winning 72-69.
The Cougars (5-2, 3-2 NACC) will return to action this Wednesday when they travel to California to take on the University of La Verne. Tip off is set for 8:00pm central time.
