Oct. 25, 2017 - A soccer season that saw overall progress, if not necessarily by record, came to a close on a chilly evening in Montgomery, IL as the Aurora University Spartans defeated the Concordia University Chicago Cougars by a final score of 5-1.
The Cougars'
Aymen Maman and
Peter Munro produced the first scoring chances of the match. However, the Spartans' first shot of the game in the 13th minute geberated momentum for the home team, and they went on to dominate the first half with a shot total of 17-5. Andrew Grabowski's header opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. Aurora extended its lead as Xavier Ortiz crossed for Jacob Lysik to finish in the 28th minute, and Henry Zehnal cashed in on a rebound in the 33rd minute to make it a 3-0 game. CUC's
Joel Krenz had an opportunity to cut into the AU lead, but his shot was saved by the Spartans' keeper, leaving a margin of three goals at the half.
Aurora put the game out of reach with a penalty kick goal by Ortiz in the 59th minute and a Jordan Schure goal in the 79th minute. Concordia-Chicago managed the final tally, getting their goal five minutes before full-time as
Fabian Robles struck for his team-leading sixth of the season. Robles finished his career this evening with 11 goals and 25 points.
The Spartans outshot the Cougars 28-13 with
Roberto Aragon making 10 saves for CUC. Aragon finished his three-year career with 11 wins and 309 saves.
Concordia-Chicago finished with a 3-13-0 record, 3-7-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Their three wins came against Lakeland University, Rockford University and, in a historic win for the program, a 1-0 victory over Dominican University.
