River Forest, Ill.- Concordia-Chicago looked to come into this afternoon's match against Concordia-Wisconsin wanting to finish the weekend on a high note. The Cougars showed fight the first two sets, but the Falcons were too much as they won in three sets (25-20, 25-18, 25-16) and improve their record to 22-2 overall and 8-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
Much of the first set was played pretty even when the score was 13-12. Shannon Stamp and Alexa Lomantini each had two kills to keep the Cougars within striking distance of the conference leaders. Concordia-Wisconsin extended their lead to five points that put the set out of reach from Concordia-Chicago as the Falcons took set one 25-20.
Early in the second set, Stamp and Jaylynn Johnson continued to contribute for the Cougars. However, the Falcons sprung six straight points capitalizing on many CUC attack errors to extend their lead to 12-5. The Cougars cut the lead to as little as four with two Julia Spitelli kills, but it was too little too late as the Falcons took set two 25-18.
In set three, both teams were neck and neck at 10-9 in favor of Concordia-Wisconsin. In the nine points, the Cougars had two kills from Johnson and Austin Thompson, while the Falcons had multiple attacking errors. CUW from there put the pressure on CUC and the Cougars couldn't respond the way they wanted with the Falcons cruising to a 25-16 set three win and sweep 3-0.
The Cougars (16-10, 3-5 NACC) return to action next Friday, October 20th, when they travel to Milwaukee, Wis. to take on Alverno College. First serve is set for 5:00pm.
