Sept. 8, 2016 - The Concordia University Chicago men's soccer team completed their three-game road trip at Marantha Baptist University this afternoon. It was a tale of two halves for the Cougars, and the second half turned out to be the one that mattered to earn CUC their first win of the year, 4-3 over the Sabercats.
Over the first 45 minutes, the Sabercats had the edge in opportunities by outshooting the Cougars 4-2. In the seventh minute, Gibril Jobe (Berwyn, IL/Morton West) fought hard in the right hand side of the box to force a penalty kick. Roberto Avila (Cicero, IL/Morton East) took the penalty kick and buried it in the lower right hand corner of the net to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. In the 11th minute, Marantha came charging down the field with a cross across the box that somehow got through to Brett Cournoyer's foot and he netted it to tie the game at 1-1.
The best chance the Cougars had after the MBU goal was in the 14th minute when Chris Arevalo (Chicago, IL/St. Patrick) was one on one with the goaltender with a defender clinging on his heels, but sailed it high over the crossbar. In the 23rd minute, Marantha's captain Wira Wama used some fancy footwork and scored for a Sabercats' 2-1 lead. The next 20 minutes of the match was a defensive matchup until Marantha broke open with a third goal in the 41st minute by Daniel Krill.
In the second half, play was dominated by Concordia-Chicago. The Cougars held possession for about 80 percent of the time in their 3-0 run. The comeback started three minutes into the second half where Peter Kass (Western Springs, IL/Lyons Township) scored his first collegiate goal on a header off a corner kick. After that goal, the Cougars didn't look back. Two minutes later, Avila had a free kick from about 25 yards out that found its way through Concordia and Marantha players and into the back of the net to tie the game. Lastly, in the 65th minute, Jobe came streaking down the right side of the field, beating his defender and the goalkeeper to the lower left corner for what would turn out to be the game-winning goal for the Cougars. This win was CUC's first win of the year, pushing their record to 1-2 on the season.
The Cougars will return to action again for the home opener on Sunday, Sept. 11 with a match against Illinois College at 2 p.m.
