North Central Too Much For Cougars

September 6, 2016- The Concordia University Chicago Cougars continued their two match day taking on the North Central Cardinals in match number two. CUC looked to recover after a hard fought match with North Park just 30 minutes prior. CUC showed fight in the match, but it was not enough for the powerful attack of North Central.

In set one North Central jumped out to a quick lead prompting a CUC timeout. North Central never would relinquish control in the set, despite a strong performance by Jaylynn Johnson. CUC fell behind 18-11 and tried to rally. Getting kills from Johnson, Arendia Ruiter, and Calista Chaltron during the rally CUC got as close as 19-17 but did not have enough steam to catch the Cardinals.

Set two was much like the first early. North Central used the momentum from the first set, along with a few attack errors on the Cougars part to jump out early. Chaltron got into a swing, and was able to tie the set up at seven, but NCC rattled off the next four points to grab the edge. The Cardinals forced a CUC timeout leading 15-10, and continued to control in the set wining 25-13.

CUC needing to win the third set to keep the match going came out with another level of energy in set three. Unfortunately, NCC had the Cougars number jumping out to a 12-6 lead early in the set. CUC continued to fight hard and not give up. Trailing 19-10 they tried to push back. Kills by Sarah Smith, and Ruiter got things going, and a big block by Shelby Spitz propelled the run. Getting within 19-14, but NCC proved to be too much taking set three 25-17 and the match 3-0.

The Cougars (1-5) will have the rest of the week to prepare for a three game weekend in Richmond, Indiana. They are set to take on Franklin College to begin the weekend with opening serve scheduled for 2:00pm.
