Eagles Blank Cougars In Sweep

April 19, 2016 - After a busy eight game week that the Concordia University Chicago Cougars came out of 6-2, they began a new eight-game week today. They met the Benedictine University Eagles in a big NACC doubleheader. Benedictine entered the day just one game ahead of the Cougars in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference standings. The Eagles would do a majority of their damage with two outs today, and would leave three games up on the Cougars after a 14-0 and 12-0 blanking of the Cougars.

In game one, Benedictine grabbed the lead in the second inning with a leadoff homerun. They jumped all over the Cougars in the third, plating 11 runs on eight hits, all of which came after there were two out to put a 12-0 stranglehold on the game. CUC would get multiple runners on base in the fourth, but a great pickoff throw by the Eagles' catcher ended the threat. CUC tried one more time in the fifth. They got back-to-back singles by Emily Owens (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) and Alicia Salata (Bartlett, IL/H.S.) to start the inning, but were unable to bring them in.

Game two would be all Eagles as well. Two first-inning homeruns set the tone for the game. The best chance to score in game two for CUC came in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Meghan Johnson (Glendale Heights, IL/Glenbard West) was hit by a pitch. She advanced 60 feet when Allie Bochat (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) hit a 1-0 pitch through the left side, but both runners were stranded. Benedictine scored three more times in the second, once in the fifth, and five times in the sixth to run away with game two.

The Cougars (18-9 7-7 NACC) will need to have short memories of today's games. They will be back in action again tomorrow from the Concordia Softball Field in non-conference action. They are scheduled to take on the Elmhurst College Bluejays with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m
.
