Jaguars Claw Past Cougars 3-1

October 5, 2016- Tonight the Cougars returned to Geiseman Gymnasium. They would take a break tonight from Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play to take on the Governors State Jaguars. The Cougars came out firing early to take set one, but would be unable to take any of the following sets, falling in the match 3-1 (26-24, 18-25, 17-25, 19-25)

In set one, CUC opened up with a big dual block, and big swings by Jaylynn Johnson. Another big block by Johnson and Nicoletta Crowley made it 7-3 early. Austin Thompson kept the scoring coming with a perfect cross court kill. The Jaguars battled back to within 9-8, but Thompson stopped the run with a strong swing off the left side. The two teams continued to match points until a kill by Shelby Spitz and an ace by Hannah Johnson extended the lead back out to four. Governors State fought back to take a 21-19 lead late in the set, to force a CUC timeout. The Cougars came right back with kills by Crowley Thompson and Sarah Smith to get within a point of taking the set. The set went into extra points, before CUC was able to close the set out with an ace by Thompson.

In set two, the two teams continued to keep close through the early points. A kill by Raven Burns gave CUC the 9-8 lead in the set. The Jaguars answered back with a short 3-0 run to take the 11-9 lead. Governors State attack errors quickly gave CUC the lead back, but just as quick it was eraced to tie the set at 13. GSU was able to take advantage of multiple Cougar attack errors over the following few points to take a 19-15 lead and force a Cougar timeout. The Jaguars were able to get their offense rolling over the final few points to take set two 25-18.

In set three, GSU jumped out quickly. CUC tried to battle back with a kill by Thompson, but continued to trail. Burns continued to help the rally, and a booming kill by Johnson continued the Cougar's fight.  Despite the early fight, the Jaguars were able to roll to a second straight set 25-17.

In set four, CUC showed a renewed energy early in the set. Kills by Arendia Ruiter and Johnson got the scoring started. A dual block by Burns and Crowley quickly extended the lead out to 6-4. GSU reclaimed the lead, but Burns countered with a perfectly placed tip to grab the lead back. The Jaguars just as quickly continued the back and forth battle to take a 15-11 lead, forcing a Cougar timeout. CUC showed their customary fight with back-to-back kills to get within 19-17. CUC's fight finally ran out in the set, falling 25-19.

Johnson led the way with 15 kills followed by Thompson with 13. Hannah Johnson led defensively with 13 digs, and Crowley finished with 40 assists.

The Cougars will return to Northern Athletics Colligate Conference play when they head to Milwaukee on Saturday to take on Alverno with first serve set for 12:00pm.
