Oct. 16, 2016 - The Concordia University Chicago women's soccer team hosted Alverno College on Senior Day, looking to extend their conference winning streak to three and take over third place in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. The game started with all but one of the seniors on the field, including injured senior defender Kelsey Schwab making a cameo appearance. Concordia-Chicago was able to dominate the Inferno from start to finish, taking 32 total shots in the match and not allowing the Inferno any shots, resulting in a 3-0 CUC win.
The Cougars were off to a quick start in the third minute when senior midfielder Natalie Weinhold set up Sarah LaCost, who beat the Alverno goalkeeper to her left to give CUC an early 1-0 lead. Â
Much of the first half was played by the Cougars on the Alverno half of the field. The pressure finally broke through in the 23rd minute. Krista Pojero sent a beautiful thru ball to Nikki Anderson left of the box where Anderson was able to bury the ball into the back of the net to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.Â
The second half started off with a defensive struggle as no real scoring threats were generated by either team. However, in the 62nd minute, the Cougars were able to find a hole in the Inferno defense when freshman Emily Johnson found a loose ball on her foot and beat the goalkeeper for her first collegiate goal and a 3-0 lead.Â
In the 89th minute, the Cougar seniors Anderson, Weinhold, Alisha Johnson, Christina Kiotis, Megan Albregts, and Elizabeth Sanders were given a standing ovation from an energetic crowd at Concordia Stadium and were greeted with open arms by other seniors Schwab and Sharice Ellenwood, who all celebrated their successful careers at Concordia at halftime.
"Today was a special day getting to honor those eight and all that they accomplished during their time here," said CUC head coach Chris Brown following the match. "We did what we needed to do today. We are in control of where we finish, and this team continues to show up hungry and ready to work day after day."
The Cougars (9-5-1, 5-2 NACC) will travel to Aurora, IL on Wednesday Oct. 19 to take on Aurora University at 2 pm. .in an important NACC matchup that will have implications for the conference tournament.Â
