Second-Half Blues Continue for Men's Soccer

Sept. 6, 2015 - The Concordia-Chicago Cougars completed a weekend of back-to-back contests this afternoon with a home match against Millikin University. Another hot and humid afternoon greeted the two teams, both of whom had played on the road on Saturday. As was the case yesterday, the Cougars played another close first half in today's game, but the opposition turned on the jets in the second half to run away to victory. In this case, it was Millikin that scored five times in the final 45 minutes to take a 5-2 win over CUC.

The visitors outshot the home team 6-1 over the first half, but it was the Cougars that emerged with the only goal in the 16th minute. CUC was awarded a free kick following a Millikin foul near the corner flag on the right side. Daniel Krajewski (Addison, IL/Addison Trail) sent the ball into the box from where Daniel Parrga (Long Beach, CA/Orange Lutheran) one-touched it to the left corner of the goal just inside the post for a 1-0 lead.

Millikin turned the tide with three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half. The first two came in nearly identical situations with a Big Blue throw-in from about 25 yards out along the left sideline. On the first, Nick Abel sent the throw in front of the goal, and the ball was misplayed by the Cougars and landed behind everybody for the goal. Two minutes later, Abel's throw-in was headed at close range by Oliver Czopek off the crossbar and in the goal.

The Big Blue produced a pretty goal in the 59th minute to make the score 3-1. A pass from the back looked to catch Ben Spelman in stride. The ball bounced on the turf but Spelman flicked the ball with his heel toward the right corner of the goal. The ball was perfectly placed just inside the post for a breath-taking goal.

Concordia-Chicago got on back in the 66th minute. Gibril Jobe (Berwyn, IL/Morton West) received the ball with some space on the left side. With the keeper advancing toward him, Jobe chipped the ball out of his reach and just under the crossbar to the right corner for a 3-2 score.

Millikin restored their two-goal lead in the 76th minute as.Takunda Jakachira curled a shot from the left side at the top of the box. Spelman added his second goal of the match in the 83rd minute to account for the final score.

The final advantage in shots went to Millikin by a 23-3 count. Jorge Guzman (Cicero, IL/Morton East) made two saves for CUC.

Today's game was the first of four straght at home for the Cougars. They will entertain Beloit College on wednesday at 4 p.m.
