Sept. 19, 2015Â - Today, the Cougars started what some people like to call the "second season" on a positive note, downing the Marian Sabres by a score of 2-1 in Fond Du Lac Wisconsin.
The Cougars were able to put a complete game together in the victory on Saturday, coming out of the gate strong and keeping the pressure on Marian throughout the match.
Elizabeth Sanders (St. Louis, MO/Parkway South) would get three shots on net in the first 10 minutes, and
Alisha Johnson (Coal City, IL/H.S.)Â rang the post in the 21
st minute
Concordia-Chicago took control of the match in the 23
rd minute. The Cougars were called for an offside violation just minutes before but would earn the ball back. The Cougars were then able to pass the ball forward, creating a two-on-one situation, and it was
Allison Kruk (Elgin, IL/St. Edward) who hit the back of the net on a shot across the box and just inside the near post. The game continued in the visitors' favor, and the teams headed into the locker room at the half with the Cougars leading 1-0.
In half number two, Concordia-Chicago continued its aggressive play and outshot the Sabres, They would also take six more corners than Marian in the game as well.
Insurance is something everyone needs, and the Cougars got the critical second goal in the 67
th minute.  Johnson took a shot that was initially saved by the Marian goalkeeper, but the rebound would fall right to Kruk who put the finishing touches on her second goal of the match that made it a 2-0 game.
Marian tried to rally in the 70th minute. The Sabres broke through the Cougar defense, and Carley Schmit worked a one-on-one against CUC keeper
Maddie Kroll (Geneva, IL/H.S.). The ball found the back of the net, cutting the lead to 2-1.Â
The Cougar defense would hold tough through the remaining 20 minutes, securing the opening conference win.
The Cougar women (2-5-0, 1-0-0 NACC) have a few days rest until they are back in action on Wednesday evening at Benedictine University. That match is scheduled to kick off under the lights at 7 p.m.
