Buccaneers Sink Cougar Women

Sept. 9, 2015 - On what was a perfect day for soccer, the Concordia Cougars would feel it go dismal after a 5-1 loss to the Beloit College Buccaneers.

The Cougars came out swinging in the first five minutes on the grassy field under blue skies. Allison Kruk (Elgin, IL/St. Edward) got good looks on net but was denied by the Bucs' defense. It would be Beloit's Genesis Dade outracing the Cougar defense in the seventh minute that opened the scoring. Her shot sailed inside the left post past goaltender Maddie Kroll (Geneva, IL/H.S.) for the first goal of the game.

The Buccaneers doubled their lead just two minutes later. It was Dade again, one-touching a pass from Candace Cunningham, that would find the back of the net.

Concordia-Chicago found themselves on the attack in the 43rd minute, Elizabeth Sanders (St. Louis, MO/Parkway South) blasted a shot that would be just knocked away by the Beloit goalie. The race to the rebound would be won by the Buccaneers, and the halftime score would stand at 2-0.

Beloit came out strong in the second half as Dade finished off the hat trick, finding the back of the net in the 52nd minute. Beloit added another in the 64th minute, making the score 4-0.

The Cougars finally broke through in the 73rd minute. Alisha Johnson (Coal City, IL/H.S.) sent a corner kick sailing into the box that eventually found the head of Natalie Weinhold (St. Peters, MO/Lutheran St. Charles). Weinhold put the finishing touches on her first goal of the year, placing it just inside the far post. But Beloit added another goal late, leading to the final score of 5-1.

Head Coach Chris Brown said after the game, "it wasn't our best effort; it's one of those games that you need to flush away and start looking towards Saturday."

The Cougars will return home for a doubleheader weekend, kicking off Saturday against Maranatha Baptist University at 3:30.
