Box Score April 19, 2015 – The Cougars hosted Aurora University in a NACC conference game that was moved forward to avoid the predicted weather disruption. CUC earned a tough 6-1 win as the batters took a beating on the cool spring day.
The winning pitcher in game one was junior
Eric Palmer (Melrose Park, IL/West Leyden) who went five innings against his former team while allowing four hits with six strikeouts, two walks and only one run.
Rob Lock (Chicago, IL/St. Ignatius) and
Matt McTague (Skokie, IL/Niles North) each pitched two innings of shutout relief.
It was a pitchers' duel till the bottom of the fourth inning, althoughÂ
Carlos Olavarria (Rosemont, IL/East Leyden)Â gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the previous inning when he singled in
Jeff Von Moser (Chicago, IL/Notre Dame). In the fourth, the Cougars scored four runs on only three hits as four players were hit by pitches before a pitching change was made.
In the top of the fifth, Aurora pulled back a run on three hits, all after two outs. In the bottom of the seventh, CUC added an insurance run after
Joe Silva (Arlington Heights, IL/Hersey) led off the inning being hit by a pitch, the sixth CUC HBP of the game, and made it to third base on consecutive wild pitches. Olavarria flied out to deep left bringing in the run to make the final score 6-1.
After the game, the temperature dropped 10 degrees in a matter of minutes. As it became clear that the scheduled rain was indeed going to happen, game two was postponed. An announcement on the makeup date will be made over the next 24 hours. The team's next regularly scheduled games are against Lakeland College at home on Saturday.
