March 4, 2015 –
Cody Caballero (Lemont, IL/H.S.), left-handed pitcher for the Concordia University Chicago baseball team, played a starring role in the Cougars' season-opening 6-5 win in 12 innings over St. John Fisher College on March 1. The Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference recognized Caballero's effort with the Student-Athlete of the Week award for baseball (pitchers), covering the week of Feb. 23-March 1.
A member of the NACC's All-Freshmen team in 2014 when he went 4-0 with a 1.78 ERA, Caballero began his second season with a great six-inning relief effort against the Cardinals who were coming off a 31-11 record last season. Caballero pitched the sixth through the eleventh innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits and two walks while striking out a career-high nine batters. He threw a total of 97 pitches, 59 for strikes.
Cody was outstanding today," said CUC head coach
Adam Smith. "I think they hit maybe one ball solidly off of him. Cody gives us a lot of flexibility as a starter or a long man, and he is one reason why we are extremely confident in our pitching staff."
